Going solar in Florida, Texas, or New Jersey is worth the initial investment. Both Florida and Texas are two of the sunniest of states in the U.S., with New Jersey not too far behind. These three states, as well as 35 other states in the country, offer some excellent solar tax incentives, rebates, and net-metering programs to maximize your savings.
Property tax exemption on the added home value gained from the installation of a rooftop solar system, a home solar system state sales tax exemption, plus a nationwide federal solar tax credit equaling 30% of your total system cost, and the occasional rebate program, all add up to some significant savings.
At West Bay Energy in Pinellas Park, Florida, we install custom designed solar energy systems in Florida, Texas, and New Jersey, with more states being added to our service area soon. Our custom design and installation team of solar panel professionals can walk you through the tax incentives, rebates, net-metering program rules and regulations so that you can make an informed decision about whether you want to go solar.
Did you know that according to a recent survey by ForbesHome.com, “almost 50% of the respondents said they plan to install solar panels in the future. 60% of those respondents are concerned about their home’s impact on the environment. 75% of survey respondents said it’s important for them to switch to solar within the next five years.”
The survey results go on to say that “19% of Americans either have solar panels already or are currently in the process of installing them. Of the remaining 81% surveyed, an astonishing 48% of respondents said that while they don’t currently have solar panels, they plan to install them in the future.”
This means that many Americans are now becoming more and more educated about and aware of the positive aspects, financial benefits, and environmental advocacy of installing solar energy systems in their homes. Part of that education includes knowing about state laws regarding solar panels and the required solar energy system insurance coverage for your home.
While different states have different laws, some state laws, including Florida, expressly forbid the prohibition of solar panels by local government boards or city managers, and other entities, including homeowners’ associations. Some rules regarding design and appearance may be permissible, however, in designated historic districts.
Solar panels are typically included in most homeowners’ insurance policies with no separate coverage required. But smaller statewide or regional insurance companies have tightened underwriting rules over the past few years that impact solar energy systems.
While insurance coverage laws differ depending on the insurance company and the state you live in, let’s use a simple average system as an example of what kind of coverage you may need.
There are three tiers that are delineated by the total size of the system you install. Tier 1 is up to 10 kW. Tier 2 is 10 to 100 kW, and Tier 3 is 100 kW and more, up to 2,000 kW. And your system must adhere to the National Electric Code for Photovoltaic (PV) systems.
For Tier 2 systems, utility companies in most states, for example, require proof of a Personal Liability Policy (PLP) of at least $1 million. The rationale behind this policy is that the utility companies must protect themselves from liability if a customer-owned solar panel system causes injury or death.
In addition, you will need to add the value of the installed solar panels to your existing homeowner’s insurance policy. This way both your home, its furnishings, your belongings, plus your solar panel system, are all fully covered.
At West Bay Energy, we specialize in all aspects of solar panel installation, including customized solar energy system design, panel-to-roof installation, customer support services, explanation of solar incentives, tax exemptions, and more.
Our customer support services staff can walk you through all the insurance requirements, step-by-step, until you fully understand what type of coverage you will need once the system is installed and running. In addition, they will be happy to explore your particular state’s tax incentives, rebate programs, and where applicable, net-metering policies, plus federal and other available tax exemptions so that you maximize your investment dollars.
No matter what the size of your job, whether it’s your home or your business, we apply the highest quality of work to the custom design and installation of our solar panels. And by the way, because our job is to offer our customers the best panels on the market, we’ve spent a good deal of time reviewing the integrity of the construction, amount of wattage per panel, company warranties, and the overall quality of the workmanship so that in the end, we have selected Mitrex as our solar panel supplier and partner.
Mitrex has developed aesthetically attractive solar panels that can be directly integrated onto roofs of homes and office buildings, into structure facades, and even built into glass windows or walls, siding, greenhouses, railings, and more. The Mitrex systems have frameless modules, hidden mountings, homogeneous surfaces, and can feature the appearance of any material, color, or pattern.
In addition, the Mitrex company has the same basic goals as we do here at West Bay: “…to accelerate the adoption of sustainable, energy-generating, human-made structures” and to use renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprints and help save our environment
Designed to outperform and outlast other solar panels, Mitrex panels installed expertly by West Bay Energy can last up to 25 to 30 years with little to no maintenance. A simple bi-annual cleaning will keep your panels working effortlessly.
